Last name 'Yee' pronounced in Cantonese translates into fish, while paper airplanes represent learned behaviors passed on.
Fish Out of Water is a portrayal of cultural differences and the tension that can come from being raised with traditional Chinese parents in an American society. Through a loose series of immersive sketches utilizing the spatial drawing platform, Mental Canvas, I fuse personal experience with imagination to better understand who I am while creating a comforting space for conversation.
Dining with family.
Dining with friends.
Exhibition showcase.
Guarded by paper airplanes hung using fishing wire, I share my interactive drawings in an exhibition space with a mystery QR code as a "point of entry" into this personal topic.
Due to the countless layers of cultural differences experienced, am still continuing to face and am learning about, I consider this to be a lifelong project bridging my cultures that can always be expanded upon.
Feel free to utilize the QR code or follow this link to view the animation and explore the space at your leisure.
